The Social Utility

The Switchboard Manifesto

We built a phone line, not another app. This page explains why — the seven things we believe about how people should meet each other, and the promises we intend to keep.

  1. 01

Voice is the original social network.

Long before feeds, likes, and follower counts, people picked up a phone and talked. A voice carries tone, hesitation, laughter — everything a comment section strips out. We didn't invent anything new; we brought back the most human technology ever shipped and gave it a modern operator.

  2. 02

A feed is not a conversation.

Social media stopped being social a long time ago. Scrolling past ten thousand strangers is not meeting one. Switchboard has no feed, no posts, and nothing to scroll — the only thing that happens here is two or more people actually talking.

  3. 03

Anonymity, done right, makes people more honest.

When nobody can see your face, your job title, or your follower count, all that's left is what you say. Numbers stay hidden, profiles stay minimal, and conversations between people are never recorded. What you get in return is the kind of candor the internet forgot was possible.

  4. 04

No app. Your phone already has the killer feature.

There is nothing to install, no account to create, no onboarding carousel. You call a phone number — the same way people have connected for 150 years. It works from a flagship smartphone and it works from a flip phone.

  5. 05

The operator works for you, not on you.

Our AI operator exists to do one job: understand who you'd like to talk to and put you on the line. It is a switchboard operator, not an engagement engine. It doesn't optimize your session length, it doesn't learn how to keep you hooked — it connects you and gets out of the way.

  6. 06

    Utility, not attention.

We sell minutes of live conversation, like a utility sells water. We don't sell ads, and we don't sell your data. When you hang up happy, our work is done — we make nothing from your attention, so we never have to farm it.

  7. 07

    Strangers are the point.

Your friends love you, and that's exactly why they can't always help. A stranger owes you nothing but honesty. The fresh perspective — the one that actually moves you forward — almost always comes from outside your circle. Switchboard exists to put that person on the line.

The whole product fits in one sentence:

Call in, tell the operator what you're figuring out, and get put on the line with someone worth talking to.
